Arizona State Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham has a habit of complimenting Deion Sanders during game week. Last November, he praised the Colorado Buffaloes coach for how far the program had come, and then his Sun Devils went to Folsom Field and won 42-17. Dillingham went back to that theme during his Monday press conference, five days before Colorado visits Mountain America Stadium in Tempe. He started with Colorado’s results, then worked his way to Sanders himself. “Like I said, they’ve basically had the lead in almost every game that they’ve played,” Dillingham said. “And they’re playing as competitive football as any team in our league right now. So I think he’s done a really good job.” A little gamesmanship comes with the territory when a 4-4 team fresh off a 27-20 loss at BYU talks up a 3-5 opponent. Even so, most of what Dillingham said holds up once you check the box scores. Colorado has held a lead at some point in seven of its eight games this season. The 41-7 loss at Northwestern is the only game in which the Buffaloes never went in front. The trouble has come after the lead. Colorado led Texas Tech 7-6 in the third quarter and Oklahoma State 24-23 at halftime, then lost those games by 22 and 33 points. Calling the Buffaloes as competitive as anybody in the league is generous for a team sitting at 1-4 in Big 12 play. Finishing games is the part Sanders still has to fix.
Halloween may be over, but the NFL stars certainly made the most of the holiday before packing away the costumes and decorations for another year. Players across the league stepped away from the football action to enjoy some family time, dress up, and take in all the fun that comes with the spooky holiday. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and his wife, actress Hailee Steinfeld, were among the NFL families celebrating in style. They had an especially sweet Halloween to celebrate with their newest addition, baby Harper Haize Allen. It's been quite a year for the couple, and getting to enjoy the holiday as a family of three made this Halloween one to remember. Between the costumes, the family moments, and all the little holiday traditions, there's something pretty special about seeing these football stars trade the gridiron for a little Halloween magic. Steinfeld gave fans a peek at the family's Halloween fun in her Monday edition of the Beau Society newsletter, revealing that baby Harper Haize Allen had quite the costume lineup this year. In fact, the little one didn't settle for just one look. Harper dressed up as a bat, a Cabbage Patch doll, and even a Highland cow, which Hailee revealed was dad Allen's choice. Apparently, the family had so much fun with the Halloween festivities that they're not quite ready to call it a wrap. As Steinfeld put it, they're keeping the dress-up going a little longer. Like many very rich people, 40-somethings and very rich 40-somethings, LeBron James loves himself some wine. The all-time leading scorer in NBA history has long been nose-deep in the wine game, raising glasses with longtime pals-turned-oenophiles like Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul for more than a decade. His Instagram posts about which wines he and his teammates were enjoying on any given night could drive consumption trends. He's appeared on the cover of Wine Enthusiast magazine; he once pulled up to a Los Angeles Lakers gamewith a glass of wine. When he and eventual Lakers head coach J.J. Redick launched their basketball strategy podcast, "Mind the Game," every discussion of coverages and tactics was punctuated by no small number of swirls and sips; no less a source than r/wine has proclaimed the King "no wine slouch." (And Reddit would never steer you wrong.) "I've heard it's good for the heart," James told ESPN's Baxter Holmes for a story on the NBA's "secret wine society" published in 2020. "Listen, I'm playing the best basketball of my life, and I'm drinking some wine pretty much every day. Whatever it is, I'll take it." James isn't quite playing the best basketball of his life anymore, near the start of his 24th professional season and his first as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He's still pretty damn good, though, and he's still taking it, whatever it is … even if "it" is in a fan's cup during a game.
