Luka Dončić's was ready to make a statement in the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA Cup opener on Friday. It worked, for a single quarter. The Lakers opened the game on a 40-15 run that extended into the second quarter, with the Golden State Warriors once again looking like a deteriorating roster. Dončić appeared to be on a mission in particular, posting 21 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal in the first quarter alone. That might have had something to do with his previous run-in with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg. Regardless, the rest of the game didn't work out so well for Los Angeles. By halftime, the game was tied after the Warriors went on a 38-13 run over the course of 11 minutes and 39 seconds. After three quarters, they led by five. About four minutes into the fourth quarter, they led by 16. The game ultimately went down as a 112-95 Warriors win, with Stephen Curry posting the highlight by dropping Dončić in the third quarter before a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to six. In fairness, Dončić responded with his own 3-pointer, which wasn't enough to avoid some unfortunate history. Per Keerthika Uthayakumar, the 17-point margin of victory is the largest ever posted by a team that had trailed by 25 points in the same game in the play-by-play era (since 1996).
